Brulhois

The Brulhois /br üjwa/( Gascon Brulhés /br üljes/in ) is an area of the north of the Gascogne, vis-a-vis the Agenais on left bank of the the Garonne mainly in the department of Lot-et-Garonne.

It is bordered by the Pays of Albret or Nérac board in the west and the Lomagne in south-east.

It draws its name from brogilo , a word Gaulois meaning “slope, borders”, “coppice”, " edge of river boisé". It is all this ground section located between the Gascon Garonne and slopes and which was covered with wood.

Geography

Brulhois is a country of terraces and slopes fluviatile bordering the the Garonne.

It east is an wine-producing area where one produces the black wine of Brulhois (Côtes name of Brulhois), a typical wine of Gascogne worked out with the type of vines Tannat, Cabernet-franc, Cabernet-sauvignon, Merlot, Côt and Iron Servadou.

History

Populated as of prehistory, Brulhois kept testimonys in particular bronzes average. It does not have escaped with the Celtic expansion of the second age of iron.

The Viscount of Brulhois appears with Xe century (960?). Its history merges with that of

  • the Gascogne
  • of the Béarn starting from 1134
  • of the Armagnac starting from 1290
  • of the Duché of Albret starting from 1515
Brulhois suffered much from the wars of religion.

Culture

Brulhois is of tradition Gascon. Country of transition towards the surface Languedocien (Guyenne), the language Gascon does not start to give up some of its features. It keeps nevertheless its two principal specificities there: the treatment of F out of H and that of - ellus/a in - eth/- will era.
