History

Perched with 738 meters of altitude, our commune located at the north of Annecy, draws its identity from its configuration and its men. The first traces of our place of life are very remote, they evoke the passage, on the territory of the commune, of an antique sees energy of PARED: (Annecy-the-Romans) with GENEVA (Geneva). In the History of the Savoyard Communes of MARIOTTE, BRAND, CHALLAMEL and WARRIOR, Saint-Martin-Bellevue are quoted for the first time into 867 during the transfer of fields by the Lothaire emperor with his Thiètberge wife. In Xlle century, the noble ones of the name of Holy Mount Martin appear in the entourage of the Counts de Genève. One of them fore-mentioned Faucon is charged, about 1180, with leading an investigation to Thônes into the intrigues of measured place. Later, another character of the same first name attends in 1227 with a made donation the Holy-Catherine Abbey by the Count of Geneva, Guillaume II. In XIIle century, the succession of these lords of Saint Martin's day Mount seems to have passed to the family De Monthoux of Barrioz who become Seigneurs of Saint Martin's day. Indeed, a branch junior by Monthoux, known as later Of Barrioz, is possessionnée since 1278 with mandement of Annecy. She had a strong house, now disappeared (Castle of Barrioz, with probable ruins in the forest of Barrioz). Pierre de Viry goes in the same direction perhaps when it specifies to have found the “traces of an antique family of Saint Martin's day Mount of the same stock as that of Monthoux, if we can accept like reasonable evidence the mention made in a Charter of 1320 of the two known last of the name of Saint Martin's day Mount and several Monthoux under the generic name of Monthoux”. In any case, it specifies “all the goods of Saint Martin's day Mount passed to Monthoux”. The Monthoux-Barrioz branch seems to be extinct in 1849 and all the other branches which they formed are also extinct. Mount-Saint-Martin who is the old name of our village had his place on the road of Saint-Jacob de Compostelle; after having belonged politically to the Duchy of Savoy, it, close to us was a geographical entity of the Genevese more. Saint Martin's day became “Bellevue” only in 1921.
