Brownstone
A brownstone is a red sandstone Trias used for the construction of urban houses. The first brownstones are built in the middle of the XIXe century in the town of New York. The stone was used in the whole world before being abandoned about 1900 because of its brittleness. The careers used for New York were located in the New Jersey and the area of the Connecticut. Others were imported of Germany.
In New York and Boston, a “ brownstone ” indicates a series of aligned and identical houses built out of red sandstone. One reaches the main door of the first stage by a staircase. This device avoided in the beginning bringing the mud of the street under the shoes. In New York, the brownstones are particularly numerous in the Borough of Brooklyn, for example in the districts of Bedford Stuyvesant and Park Slope. Many a brownstones was recently renovated to accommodate a middle-class population, within the framework of the Gentrification of certain districts like Harlem.
