Roger Brunet is a geographer, professor of the universities and highly skilled research director of CNRS. The national geographical Institute (IGN) decreed to him in 2006 the title of “larger inventor-geographer of the XXe century”, for its invention of the Chorème S. It should however be recalled that a fight between geographers makes rage to know if the “palm” would not return rather to Walter Christaller, for its invention of the theory of the central places.

Elements of biography

Born with Toulouse in 1931, Roger Brunet carries out higher learning at the university there. It is received major with the aggregation of geography in 1953, and supported its thesis of doctorate of State on “the Toulouse campaigns” and a complementary thesis on “the phenomena of discontinuity in geography” in 1965.

Successively chief of work, lecturer, university lecturer and professor at the university of Toulouse (1957 - 1966), Brunet left the south for the Champagne while becoming professor with the Université of Rheims (1966-1976), director of the Institute of geography of Rheims and director-founder of the Institut of town and country planning and environment of the university of Rheims.

Roger Brunet joined finally Paris where it becomes Research director at CNRS, like director of the Information center of the social sciences and the laboratory Intergéo (1976-1981).

Between 1981 and 1984, it exerts like adviser technical with the cabinet of the Minister for Research and Technology, in charge of the Company and Social sciences, then as chief of the department of the company and Social sciences to the ministry for Research, devoting, after Emmanuel de Martonne, the “geography-action”.

In 1984, it founds the Groupement of public interest RECLUSE (Course study of the changes in the space localizations and units), name chosen in homage to Elisee Reclus, one of the first authors (after Malta-Brown Conrad) of a universal geography, between 1855 and 1894. Between 1990 and 1996, this group of researchers worked out a news and colossal universal Géographie in ten volumes.

He is the director of the reviews geographical Space (created in 1972) and Mappemonde (created in 1986). He is doctor honoris causa universities of Liege and Lausanne.
