Browning

The browning is a technique of Polissage used in completion:

  • Of a metal coating like the Gilding or silvering
  • Of a copper alloy or copper, gold, silver manufacture.

The operation is carried out with a tool: the Burnisher.

The burnisher exerts a pressure on the peaks of the surface, which has as a consequence a creep of the matter in the hollows, progressively of the advance of the tool.

The purpose of browning is of:

  • to make the surface of metal brilliant;
  • to improve the surface quality;
  • to reduce the roughness of surface;
  • to increase the surface hardness.
