Brothers of the Christian Schools

The Frères of the Christian Schools (or Lasalliens ) form a religious Institute dedicated to the education of the young people of the modest classes, founded in 1684 by Jean-Baptiste of the Room. The brothers were familiarly called the “Brothers four arms” because of their coat which they carried without threading the handles. Their popular recruitment, not supporting always an excellent instruction of the Brothers at the time of their taking of teaching, made them call by their detractors at the end of 18th and the beginning of the 19th century the “brothers ignorantins”. But this term would come rather from what the Brothers based with Saint Yon, close to Rouen, were called " Yontains" brothers; , and Voltaire or of the voltairiens, had a joy of making " of it; Ignorantins" brothers;.

Prohibited teaching at the time of the Revolution, like all the other teaching congregations, they are again authorized under the Empire thanks to the influence of the general inspector Ambroise Rendu, who requires them however (and other congregations) a patent of teaching. The August 15th 1808, a decree of Napoleon I {{er}} on the education envisaging in particular, in its article 38 that the schools must from now on follow the “principles of the Catholic church”, stipulates in its article 109 that the Brothers of the Christian schools will deal from now on with primary school education and will form the Instituteur S. They thus take again officially their functions in 1810. Encouraged to develop to counter the influence of the Jesuits, authorized in 1816 to return to France, they develop quickly in all France.

The Brothers of the Christian schools are not priests.
