Brotherhood of Saint-Like and of Saint-Damien

The brotherhood of Saint-Like and of Saint-Damien installation by holy Louis at the 13th century, is the first professional association of Chirurgie NS in France.

Until the 13th century, the occupation of surgeon was not clearly differentiated from that of barber. These two professions were regarded as manual trades requiring little instruction, and were generally learned by assisting a close relation. The Doctor S, on the contrary, were regarded as educated, having a book culture after studies in medical school.

Jean Pitard, first surgeon of Louis saint by creating the brotherhood of Saint-Like and of Saint-Damien distinguishes the surgeons known as from evening gown who must from now on pass an examination in front of their pars before exerting, of the surgeons known as of short dress or barbers who are in charge only of the tiny interventions. The brotherhood settles in the dependences of the church Saint-Like.

In 1437, the members of the brotherhood obtain the right to follow the courses of the medical schools.

In 1656, the brotherhood of the surgeons with evening gown amalgamates with the brotherhood of the barbers, but the activities of the latter are limited (to shave, bleed and be confined). The two brotherhoods again separate in 1743.

In 1748, Louis XV creates the royal Académie of surgery at the request of its surgeon Germain Pichault of Martinière and the brotherhood of the surgeons of evening gown is dissolved.
