Synopsis
Kenai is a turbulent young man. Off-hand and adventurous, it impatiently waits the day when the mistress of ceremonies will give her totem to him, symbol of a virtue which it will have to follow all its life. But whereas he imagines it to represent a powerful animal, symbol of power or wisdom like his brothers Sitka and Denahi, he receives " the bear of the amour".Furious of the mockery of his/her brother and the reproaches of the second as for the flight by a bear of the fishing which was to be used for the banquet and which the ease of Kenaï had supported, Kenaï decides to launch out to the continuation of the plantigrade in the forest. It ends up finding and facing the animal at the top of a rock peak, but supposing its forces, it is quickly in difficulty. His/her two brothers intervene then to move away the danger but the bear is too much strong and strikes of a blow of leg Sitka, the elder one, which slips towards a crack. Decided to complete it, the bear notices that Kenaï and Denahi are them also in vulnerable position and is turned over against them. Sitka then plants its lance in a slit of the glacier which crumbles involving the bear and itself in a fall which is fatal for him, whereas the bear draws some. Despaired and insane of rage, Kenaï tracks the bear and ended up killing it at the top of a rock needle. At this point in time spirits appear and metamorphose it in bear.
At the beginning, Kenaï has much evil to accept this transformation, the more so as it makes the meeting of a talkative bear cub named Koda. With the wire of the conversation, Koda teaches him that he knows the top where " the lights of the sky touch the terre". However, Kenaï must reach this top if he wants to find his human appearance and Koda is the only one to know the way of it… at least, to remember it vaguely because he was very small when he went there. Kenaï is seen constrained to accompany it, in spite of its chattering excessive and aggravating. Progressively, Kenaï becomes less cold and binds friendship with the orphan bear cub.
Once arrived at the foot of the mountain, they discover a lake at the edge of which are gathered a multitude of bears which fish and play length of day. One their plays consists in telling a palpitating history. Those of the bears are in general not quite enthralling. Kenaï tells that it made the meeting of most unbearable bear cubs, but that, now, they are like brother. Then Koda tells that one day, hidden in a bush, he saw a hunter killing his mother…
Kenaï includes/understands: it is him which killed the mother of Koda whereas he was still a man. Ashamed, it leaves the group and tries to reach only the top but it is caught up with by Koda, always nourishing the desire of the nearest return of his mother. Kenaï announces to him that his/her mother will never return and Koda leaves in tears, refusing this reality. Kenaï arrives at the top of the mountain where it is attacked by his Denahi brother, only survivor of the tracking (at least, it is what Denahi believes because, arrived at the top of the peak and discovering a bear at the place of Kenaï, it is persuaded that the animal is the assassin of its brother). The combat engages. Koda tries to intervene until the moment when the spirit of Sitka appears and gives again its appearance with Kenaï, in front of Denahi and Koda jellyfishes. One discovers opposite him his/her brother, whom it was apprétait to kill, and Koda realizes that his/her friend is not other than the assassin of his mother.
Kenaï makes a request with the spirits then: he wants to become again a bear, which is granted to him. It is under this appearance that it returns to the village, in company of Denahi and Koda, where it is quickly adopted by the population.
