Broad bean
The broad bean is a annual Plante of the family of the Fabacée S (leguminous plants), of which it is the type. One cultivates it for his Graine S edible. The term indicates also the seed which, consumed in a fresh or dry state, is one of the Légume S in the past cultivated. In Quebec, have calls it Gourgane and it is a traditional kitchen unit.
Scientific name Vitiated faba L., family of the Fabacée S, subfamily of the Faboideae , tribe of the Fabeae .
There exist three types of broad beans:
- the market-gardening broad bean or large broad bean ( Vitiated faba L. VAr. faba ),
- the fodder broad bean or Fèverole ( Vitiated faba L. VAr. minuta (hort. ex Alef.) Mansf.).
- the broad bean with horse or field bean with average grain ( Vitiated faba L. VAr. equine has Pers).
Description
Robust herbaceous plant, being able to exceed 1 meter. Pennate sheets finished by a point. Broad leaflets, of glaucous color. Inflorescence in racème from two to five flowers (sometimes solitary flower), with white corolla or dew, with black spots on the wings. The fruit is a pod containing of seeds of form oval and flattened with a thick skin, the broad beans.
