Broad

In navigation, the broad is opposed to coastal water.

There is not not definition specifies limit between the broad one and coastal water; generally, it is admitted that one arrives at the broad one when one loses sight of the fact the coast, per good weather. One then passes from the coastal navigation (where one can use the headlights, bitter beacons, , etc, to make the not by optical raisings) with the ocean navigation (or other methods are necessary to determine the Position: navigation astronomical, radioelectric, navigation by satellite, etc).

Note: with broad, the depth can be low (for example on the high funds), just as the depth can be very large near the coast: it is the distance to the coast, and not the depth, which distinguishes the broad one from the coastal area.
