The British Interplanetary Society ( (A) ), founded in 1933, is the oldest association whose object is exclusively the promotion of the Astronautique and of the Space conquest. It is a Association with nonlucrative goal whose seat is with London and who is financed by the contributions of his members. The (A) off publishes the scientific publication Journal the British Interplanetary Society ( JBIS ) and the magazine Spaceflight .
The (A) was preceded by the American Interplanetary Society (founded in 1930), German VFR and the group of Soviet research astronautics, but contrary to them, it was never absorbed by industry.
At the time of its foundation in January 1933, the (A) wanted not only to promote and popularize astronautics, but to also undertake practical experiments of fuseology following the example above mentioned organizations. However, since 1936, the company realized that these projects were blocked by the law on the explosives of 1875 which made impossible to the United Kingdom any private experimentation of rockets.
In 2005, at the time of the first edition of the Price Arthur C. Clarke, the (A) is lived allotted a special price.
In 1951, the company organized the first international congress on the artificial satellites and became cofondatrice of the International federation of Astronautics (IAF).
In 1978, the company publishes an interstellar study of Vaisseau called Projet Daedalus which exposed in detail the feasibility of an interstellar probe towards the star of Barnard using the technologies contemporary or had a presentiment of like reasonably imminent. Daedalus used a pulsated nuclear Propulsion based on the fusion of pastilles of Deutérium/Helium-3 which would have carried it at 12% of the Speed of light.
Recently, the company launched a series of scientific studies and techniques on the human exploration of the Martian boreal polar icecap.
