British Basketball League

The British Basketball League is the league of the the United Kingdom of Basket-ball, namely more the high level of the country for the male category, with professional players. The league was formed in 1987 like higher division of the National Basketball League, before separating some in order to obtain an entirely professional statute.

Operation and history

The BBL has three competitions: the championship, the national cut (BBL Cup) and cut it League (BBL Trophy).

It should not be confused with the English Basketball League or the Scottish Basketball League, which is the second level of the basketball in the United Kingdom. Currently there is no system of promotion-reléguation between the EBL, SBL and the BBL owing to the fact that the BBL is governed by a system of franknesses (as in NBA for example).

Nevertheless some examples derogate from this rule. In 2004 the Plymouth Raiders, are, and it is a first, elected for to assemble of a division since the EBL.

In 2006, the BBL grants this exceptional favor to the Worcester Wolves. The exceptional character does not prove permanent this year. Indeed the July 22nd the Birmingham Bullets decide to make a one year pause in the championship.
