The rank of brigadier makes his appearance at the 15th century.
It had the role of distributing the residences of the troops and of placing them on the battle field.

- In 1789: One counts 768 brigadiers
- In 1792: 12 new is created.
- In 1793: The title of brigadier disappears from the military hierarchy.
- the title reappears under the Restauration and the Monarchie of July and corresponds to the rank of brigadier general
Spanish army
The rank of Mariscal de Campo was also used in the Spanish army at the time of the colonization of Americas.
Austrian army
The rank of Feldmarschall-Leutnant was also used in the Austrian imperial army.
