Brigade of the special forces ground

The Brigade of the special forces ground (BFST), based with Pau, in the Yrénées-Atlantiques gathers the Special forces Army of the 1st circle of the Commandement of special operations (COS), but to the capacity to direct operations in an autonomous way.

It is directed, since 2007, by the Général Jean-Marc Nehout.

History

The BFST is resulting from the Autonomous Special Groupement (GSA) of which it takes again the badge. The GSA was created in 1997 and comprenanit then the 1st regiment parachutist of marines and a flotilla of the 4th regiment of combat helicopters and operation dedicated to special operations.

The Detachment ALAT of Special operations (DAOS) was created in 1997. In 1999 the GSA became the Commandement of the Special forces Ground (CFST).

The BFST was activated on July 1st 2002 to replace the CFST, and included/understood the 13th regiment of dragons parachutists (13th RDP) which thus entered the 1st circle of COS.

Composition

The BFST is composed of:

  • a staff and a company of command and transmissions, stationed with Pau
  • the 1 {{er}} RPIMa of Bayonne, specialized in the direct actions
  • the 13 {{E}} RDP of Dieuze, specialized in the recognition
  • the Detachment alat of special operations, charged with the air support of the special forces

The speciality of these units implies a preset diagram on the manner of carrying out the operations: acquisition of the operational information by the 13th RDP, 1st RPIMa carries out the operation, the two units being transported and being supported by the DAOS.

The BFST leads an annual exercise called Gorgone S to ensure the interworking of three units. The name gorgones refers to the three units, like the three mythological characters.

Operations

The BFST operated since its creation in Africa (Opération Unicorn in Ivory Coast) and in Afghanistan at the side of the Americans. (Operation Enduring Freedom).
