Brig and brain

The expression brig and brain ( B&B , or C&C , Component and Brains ) indicates the innovations in which the inventor combines “bricks”, already existing components, to create a new product or a new service.

Some examples:

  • the mechanism of the Open Source which places at the disposal of the users software components that they can examine (i.e. to analyze the source code of the applications) and use (under certain conditions of responsibility and intellectual property).
  • Amazon, EBay, Google, PayPal… places at the disposal of the developers interfaces so that they create new applications, thus using their own brain ( brain ) to combine the components ( bricks ).
  • the majority of the companies Point COM used this model during their creation, in particular by entrusting their logistics:
    • with Internet network to diffuse and " livrer" numerical goods (music, software, illustration, information…),
    • at specialized companies of transport (La Poste, NMPP, DHL, UPS…) to deliver physical goods.

This last example shows well that the process exists for a long time, since already used by the mail-order selling and the Press.
