Brieuc

Brieuc is a Breton monk, originating in Wales, the first bishop of Saint-Brieuc, town of Brittany which owes him its name. It is celebrated on May 1st.

Breton etymology

Its name is resulting from Breton the " BIS " (dignity) and of the adjectival termination - euc , become eg into Breton modern. In Breton, Brieuc says Brieg (pron. BIS-EC. ). In French one finds also the forms " Briec" and " Brioc". One should not confuse holy Brieuc with Saint Briac (cf communes of Bourbriac and Saint-Briac).

Biography

Brieuc would have been born towards 409, pagan parents, in the Breton kingdom of Ceredigion, in what is not yet the Wales of today. Raise of saint Germain of Auxerre, missionary in insular Brittany, it followed it on the continent. Priest in 447, it went évangéliser the Armorican Brittany, unloaded with the River mouth-Wrac' H, and founded a monastery with Tréguier. After it recrossed the English Channel, and made there many conversions in its country of origin.

At 70 years, it returned in Armorican Brittany and based another monastery with the mouth of the Gouët, on a ground which the count of Liwil gave him, his/her relative, who became the town of Saint-Brieuc. He died towards 502. He is represented with three porte-monnaies with the belt, symbol of his generosity for the poor.

It one of the seven saints founders of Brittany, is honoured in the pilgrimage with the Tro Breizh.
