A river crossroads
- the name that Briare was given, " Briare-le-Canal" , is a little reducing because Briare has not one, but three channels. Since 1605 it accommodates the building site of the " channel of Loyre in Seyne" , future Channel of Briare which will be completely open in 1642.
- In 1838, this already old channel receives, just with the upstream of its lock of Baraban, the side Canal in the Loire which goes down from Digoin. This channel crosses the Loire in its reads-even, with five kilometers upstream, the Châtillon-on-Loire.
- This passage in the Loire is dangerous and does not fulfill any more the requirements of the river traffic. At this point in time in 1896, a new branch of the side channel is built which crosses the river by the Pont-canal metal due to the engineer Leonce-Abel Mazoyer. This new branch of the side Canal in the Loire receives the nickname of " new canal" or " channel neuf".
- the whole of these water ways forms today a not easily comprehensible network for the layman, but of an undeniable charm, the more so as the city and the department work actively with their maintenance, their restoration and their embellishment. The river site of Briare, while covering more than four centuries, is of a richness unique in France.
