Brian Molko

Brian Molko , born the December 10th 1972, is a Chanteur and American Guitariste, member of the rock group Placebo.

Biography

Born from an American father of origin free - Italy, and of a Scottish mother , Brian Molko sees the day the December 10th 1972 with Brussels, in Belgium. It with British nationality and American. Junior by a family of two boys, it follows his father, banker evolving/moving in the field of international finances. Thus it resides during the first three years of its life at the Lebanon then at the Liberia, before moving in definitively with the Luxembourg, ground where the American large companies send their the best employed. It is thanks to this childhood passed to the Grand Duchy that it became perfectly French-speaking.

In this new country Brian early begins its initiation with the various performing arts: at 11 years it takes its first steps on the scene of the theater of its school, American School Of Luxemburg, the occasion for him to try out for the first time the make-up which it is not long in associating with the scene. In same time, it assists with its first concert of the French group Téléphone of passage to Arlon in Belgium.

Simultaneously with this artistic life which opens in front of him, Brian has a spiritual life and especially nun richer than the majority of the children of her age. His/her mother, evangelist, very early initiate it with the religion which she likes so much: at 13 years it is thus a “born again Christian”, i.e. a “again born Christian”. He attends the Church assiduously, spends much time in company of the priest of his parish and takes part even in his seminars. He plunges himself in repeated readings of the Bible. However, when at 14 years he discovers his sexuality, Brian rejects all this religious framework and enters during one time of rebellion who marks the end of his “history of love with the organized religion”. It will nevertheless keep of it a great knowledge of the religious texts which appears in its texts through biblical, many and varied metaphors.

During its adolescence, Brian is bored in Luxembourg but there were according to him very good record dealers. It enters then a bulimia of music: it spends its whole days in its room to listen to and listen to still the discs which it can get. Always impassioned theater, he asks his parents to register it during dramatic art but must face the refusal of those; he is then 16 years old and is inserted even more deeply in his musical addiction, and learns in parallel from his studies the guitar as an autodidact, all alone in his room.

Some time later, in October 1990, two months before its majority, Brian leaves the family residence and moves with London where it joins again with its first loves by being registered during dramatic art of Goldsmith' S College during two years with the end of which it obtains its diploma. In parallel of its studies, it S `tests a little with the mannequinat and thus ravels for Agnès B, Gucci and Calvin Klein, inter alia. It keeps this experiment the taste of sober but very elegant clothing, which often carries the claw of large dressmakers. He also plays in London clubs, accompanied by Steve Hewitt, a beater which he met in 1991 via a common friend, and with which he works sometimes on musical projects.

After having left the university, Brian crosses two very difficult years and half, years during which it is found with the unemployment and plunged in a depression devastator. Drawing its inspiration in its tortured spirit, he learns how to live with his disease and puts up with it even by giving rise to texts gorged with blackness, rage and lust teenagers, texts which will appear in 1996 on the first album entitled Placebo . It is at this same period that it meets by chance on the outlet side of the subway South Kensington, Stefan Olsdal which attended the same Luxembourg school as him, but that it did not côtoyait because too different from him. In front of occurring the evening even in a London club, the beautiful Round the, Brian invites Stefan to attend its concert. In this morning of 1994, Stefan Olsdal accepts the invitation of his/her friend, more by courtesy that by true desire, and, at the end of the evening, impressed by the service of Brian he proposes to him to collaborate on the formation of a rock'n'roll group; thus both start to work on the first demonstrations of Placebo.

Charismatic, provocative and ambiguous leader whose sulfurous past (Drogue, alcohol, sex), the Androgyny and the Bisexualité often defrayed the chronicle, Brian Molko remains an icon for many people, the tolerance and the marginality. Its musical influences, different from those of the other members of the group, are directed more towards PJ Harvey, Blondie, David Bowie, Billie Holiday, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, Black Sabbath, The Animals, Jean-Louis Aubert, Indo-China or Jacques Brel inter alia.

Even if it is adulated, certain positions or reactions which Brian can have shock fans as journalists or musicians. Indeed at the time of a concert it had verbally been caught some with a fan, who filmed some extracts, and this in full concert. Its position on the illegal downloading had also surprised enormously world since it was opposed to it clearly pretexting " that the artists children and that should well be financed their études" has;. This declaration can make smile when one knows the number of sold Cd and concerts given over one year.
