Breuilpont in the rear view mirrorThe Latin roots of Breuilpont are undeniable as the name of the village attests some: Breuil, of Latin “brogilus” - planted field, or coppice, and Bridge, because of the passage of the river of the Eure. One finds successively: Brolium Pontis, then, in 1336: Breuil of the Bridge; then still, in 1479: Breul of the Bridge and Brutepont (or Brudepont) in 1557. The names of the two hamlets are less obvious: Saint-Chéron (apostle of Gaules at the 5th century) would be derived from “Charon” (Caraunus for the Latin form); in 1793 one discovers Saint-Chéron-of-Fountains, and, in 1828, the village is named Saint-Chéron-of-Wood. As for Lorey, several origins are possible: “Lorra”, near to Latin “Ora” (edge), or: Lorei, Lorrei, then Lorré, Lorray and Lauray or Laurey (of the bay-trees or Laurius, the equivalent of Latin Laurent) and finally Loré. In 1828: The Lorei-on-Eure. The most probable explanation lies in the proximity of the forests of Mérey and Epieds, from where: orée (of wood).
