Bretzwil

Bretzwil is a common Suisse of the canton of Basle-Countryside, located in the District of Waldenburg.

History

Located at the foot of the the Jura, the village is quoted for the first time in 1194 under the name of Braswilere . Founded to 7th by the Alamans, the commune belongs initially to the family Ramstein which has the homonymous castle located on the territory of the commune, today in ruins. It is sold with Basle in 1518, and then attached to the Bailliage of Waldenburg in 1673.

The decline of the Passementerie in residence, at the end of the 19th century, causes the departure forced several inhabitants for the towns of valley of the Birse and Basle. Nowadays, the Agriculture and the breeding remain the independent sources of local incomes, whereas more than 60% of the population works outside.

Monuments

The vault of the village, dedicated to Notre-Dame, goes back to 1239. She was a protesting temple, rebuilds in 1786 and renovated in 1953. The village also has a bridge Isaak-Bowe-Brunnen , named in memory of the one of the leaders of the Guerre of the peasants of 1653.
