Bretèche

A bretèche or bretess is a small rectangular fore-part or with cut sides, plated in Encorbellement on the wall of a defense work. It can be crenelated or covered of a roof in lean-to building. It is often placed above the access of a castle-extremely and is provided with Archère S or Meurtrière S as well as Machicoulis, the latter making it possible to defend the base of the wall.

The bretèche is also the Hune strengthened of a Bateau of war.

The bretèche often merges with the Bastide; the denomination of bretèche appears to be oldest. One said, as of the 11th century, “ bretescher ” to strengthen, furnish with crenels of wood, or Hourd S.
