History

  • the city is known in particular by the name which it carried at the time Brest-Litovsk tsarist (“Brest to Lithuania”, because the Bielorussia constituted the Slavic part of the old Grand Duchy of Lithuania), because of the treated known as of Brest-Litovsk signed on March 3rd, 1918 between the Germany and the Russia Bolshevik putting an end to the war.
  • During the 20th century, this city belonged to the Russian empire , then belonged finally to the territory Polish of 1919 with 1939 then of the independent Bielorussia Soviet then.

It bore then the name of Brest-on-the-Bug (Brześć nad Bugiem/БрэстнаБугу).
