History

The origins of Brescello go up at the time prehistoric as show it the discoveries made in the localities of Ravisa di San Genesio and Motta Balestri. Many objects are exposed to the archaeological museum.

The Gallic cénomans, resulting from the Cimbres, is the first to be established in a permanent way in this zone of the valley of the Po and names it Brixellum , which comes from Celtic “the briga” (height) and “concealed” (the temple), i.e. the temple on the height, which is without-doubt also the etymology of the town of Brussels.

Brescello becomes a Roman colony towards -190 - -189, populated by Arnense, coming from the Latium. Brescello is an important economic and strategic center, located at a key point along the course of the river. During, Brescello develops and becomes a city rich and populated with its forum and its aqueduct and various administrations and corporations.

Following the decline of the Roman Empire starting from the 3rd century, the périclite city slowly and is the subject of plunderings and destruction (it is plundered into 227). In spite of the political crisis and economic, Brescello becomes seat of évêché into 389. The first bishop is Genesio, today patron saint of the commune.

In 572, the city is occupied by the Lombards which transforms it into duchy. Between Brescello is implied in a permanent conflict between the Exarchat de Ravenne and the barbarians who invade the plain of Po. The devastations caused by the troops of the king Agilulf, into 603, and by several catastrophic floods, into 589 and towards 605-610, involve the Gallo-Roman disappearance of Brixellum.

In first half of the 12th century, a castle-extremely rises on the old site of Brixillum for the defense and the control of the river traffic. Thereafter, of important monastic orders, like that of the Benedictines, are established there.

At the 12th century, Brescello depends politically on Parma whereas during the following centuries, the history of the village reflects the alternation of various dominations: the family of the Correggeschi, the Rossi, the Visconti, the Sforza, until the Este in 1479.

The bloody battles to conquer the city lead Este to design and build a pentagonal wall enclosure with a ditch, making of Brescello a fortress city. The new city is then called, “herculéenne”, in the honor of Hercules II of Este. In 1704, the wall and the fortress of Brescello are destroyed by the Spaniards and the village is inserted again in anonymity for more than one century. The city belongs to the House of Este until the 1861, year during which Brescello belongs to the Royaume of Italy like other cities of the Reggio of Emilie.
