History

Village of the bottom of the valley, this place of required passage on the roads connecting Nice and Vintimille to Turin, a long time have an linked activity with the convoys of muleteers connecting Piedmont and the wearing of Nice by the valley of Roya and the Col of Tightens. Since the annexation of Nice by France (but without the high part of the valley), the frontier role of Breil fixed a population of government officials and soldiers. The hydroelectric installations, construction, in 1928, of a international Station on the Line Nice Breil Cuneo and Ventimiglia Breil, also marked the inter-war period, just like the presence of a garrison of alpine troops. The combat of 1940 and 1945 tested the whole of the valley hard, the destruction with Breil were important and the population was evacuated of force by the Germans, on October 28th, 1944, and was transferred in Italy from North, with Turin, where it remained until April and May 1945.

This ignored episode of the conflict in the the Alpes-Maritimes was the subject of a Report of Control of Modern history written by Goulven Godon, prepared under the direction of Jean-Louis Panicacci, supported in front of the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis in June 2004 and entitled: " The " déportation" civil populations of the valleys of the Bévéra and Roya in Italy of North (1944-1945) ".
