Breadfruit tree
The breadfruit tree ( Artocarpus altilis ) is a Fruit tree which one meets in the tropical areas.
Botany
Plant Dicotylédone of the family of the Moraceae , it is a tree Sempervirent of intermediate size which can reach 20 m in height.
Origin and distribution
The breadfruit tree is originating in Polynésie and Indonesia (islands of the Probe). It was introduced in the Antilles at the end it 18th century to nourish the slaves with its abundant fruits and nourissants. It is widespread today in all the wet tropical areas for its food and esthetic interest.
Fruit and uses
The breadfruit tree has two types of different Fruits: the fruit with bread , more running and of the called smaller fruits " cookings with fruit with bread " in Guadeloupe which is consumed crystallized or in jams.The fruit with bread can be consumed ripe, but it more generally is consumed green, cooked like vegetable. Sometimes one consumes it while cutting it in sections and putting it at the furnace. It leaves there delicious sections whose taste points out the fresh bread and artichoke.
The breadfruit tree is cultivated for its fruits in Polynesia.
Its hard wood is used to build houses or boats.
From his bark, lengthily beaten, one obtains a fabric, the Tapa .
