History

The current road MINOR ROAD 33, which gives access to the village, takes again the layout of an old Roman way. The Romans are allured by the softness of a microclimate where combine the influence of the the Mediterranean and that of the Atlantique. They built there, under the name of Eburomagus , first Bram known, about year 60 before J. - C. However, so of many Gallo-Roman vestiges were found in the neighborhoods, nothing, in their distribution, does not authorize to think that this first Bram was round like that of today. In any event, Eburomagus was to disappear completely during the centuries.

In fact, Bram current was born at the 12th century around its church, that a fortress, whose river, the Preuilhe, fed the ditches, enclosed then as in a shell. One could not there penetrate that by only one door, located at the east. Safe from this enclosure, two are terraient hundred forty-two " feux" , i.e. houses. However, the 12th century was, in all connections, one century of revival and expansion. In three recoveries, with, then with, Bram moved back its walls. But, without one knowing with precision if his inhabitants had given each other the word, the three enclosures stage oneself concentrically around the primitive core. Bram is thus built around three circular streets that only, twenty years ago still, of narrow lanes joined together between them.

Bram was one of the high places of the Catharisme, with such sign that the local historians, unearthing old manuscripts, discuss today to know if the survivors of Montségur were well flarings on the spot, about famous the “Pre one Crémats”. There are reasons to think that their martyrdom took place with Bram. In 1210, coming from Montlaur, the chief of the crusaders, Simon de Montfort, which the Spanish monk become accompanied holy Dominique, took the citadel of Bram after three days of seat. So that no one was not unaware of the way in which it treated those which dared to resist to him, it made cut the nose and the upper lip and tear off the eyes with the prisoners, which were more than one hundred. With only one of these unhappy, it was left an eye so that it could guide this lamentable troop out of the country, until the Châteaux of Lastours to show the example of those which dare to resist.

Bram seems to have known its apogee at the 17th century. At this point in time, prosperity helping, the owners dared to derogate from the rule while building out the walls. The example was given to them by the count de Lauraguais itself, which made build its Château of Lordat with the stones of the old fortifications. At the next century, little before the Revolution, one of its descendants, which did not pass for a light, being returned to England, as it was then the fashion at the notable ones, the king Louis XV required of him of its return what it had gone there to do. “To think, lord”, answered it. “Horses? ” asked the king, whose malicious gossip ensures that it was the only witty remark of all its life.

At that time, the Céréale S were the great resource of the plain of Bram. Today, the Vine their argument the place and one tries to introduce the Tabac. As of the Release, the city was with the point of the cooperatism and one saw there flowering seven co-operatives which group all the farmers of the area. However, the old trades survive: harness-maker, stone mason, wet cooper, blacksmith. But, Bram remained up to now with the variation of tourism. What undoubtedly is explained by the attraction of the mountains close and its vocation to crossing point.
