Braize

Braize is a common French, located in the department Allier and the area Auvergne.

Geography

Surface: 2095 hectares… The relief of the commune of Braize articulates on both sides small valley, sometimes marshy, towards the Russet-red Tizais or Ponds, which could explain the origin of its name (Braize=bracu=le marsh). This small valley is drained by the Brook of the Braking mills which always fed from many ponds; on the Chart of Cassini, one finds the two ponds of Pacodière (Pacaudière), those of Pouvereux (Pouveux), of Laleu (Laloeuf) with his mill, of Martinière, Duri (Laugh Them). In the south, this valley is bordered by the first buttresses of the Forest of Tronçais: Acute Puy, Montaloyer; in north, one goes up soft inclined towards the site of the current borough, with the remarkable presence of the old feudal Mound " of Mamelon" , close to the farm of Commanderie.Son not highest is located at north east of the Roundabout of Montaloyer, with the Dimension 291m, indicated by a terminal IGN; out of the national forest, Braize " culmine" with the locality Cornille with 246m: a cut stone of trapezoidal form marked it formerly, it was located in the hedge which limited an old vine and was broken during work of regrouping.

History

In Forest of Tronçais, towards Acute Puy, one recognized the vestiges of tumuli already " visités" … The Gallo-Roman occupation on the site of the commune is attested by the update of objects, of currencies, mentioned by regional authors; moreover, during the more recent creation of the ponds close to the Church, of many fragments of Roman tiles, various potteries were found, as well as traces of foundations, indicating the probable presence of a Gallo-Roman habitat in this small valley. The Roman Way of Drevant with Bourbon Archambault, arriving by " Pilori" , passed with the Heather (the borough of current Braize), Beauregard, in direction of the pond of Saint Bonnet; the toponym " Rouge" house; (Acute Puy on the current chart of State Major) in is perhaps an interesting stake… indicating an inn… the house of a roadmender?. Another way, known under names " Romaine" sees; or " Way of Templiers" , is still easily locatable in forest close to the Oak of Montaloyer, in the shape of a broad alley of ten meters and broadside of two ditches; one can follow it in direction of north until a piece recently shot down or in the south, on a layout minus Net towards the hamlet of the Arpents.

Commanderie: The current farm is built with the foot of an artificial mound " Mamelon" which one has a sight since the Amandois Saint until the heights of Vilhain; at the top of this hillock, was undoubtedly built a wood castle of which there does not remain any trace. Commanderie was to be an establishment about the Temple, in charge of the monitoring of the old Roman Way; there was a second monastic establishment, that of the Heather, founded in 1188, when the nuns of the Benedictine abbey of Charenton allotted a ground to be emphasized to him (there exist other versions). To the suppression about the Temple, in 1312, the whole of the grounds and buildings was entrusted to the Establishment of the Heather which will give rise to the current borough of Braize.

To the time of the Lords and Dukes of Bourbon, the Heather was attached to Châtellenie d' Ainay the Castle. The farm of Commanderie will be sold like national Bien with the Revolution.

Halfway towards the history, the Legend of the Oak of Montaloyer, according to which a statue of the Virgin would be protected in her trunk, comes to point out to us the episodes of the Wars of religion, then the presence of the troops of Prince de Condé to the Castle of Montrond during the Sling, from where they carried out many incursions towards Ainay or Hedgehog.

According to the priest of Saint Herault Bonnet, after the Revolution of 1789, a general panic encouraged the inhabitants to leave their residences to take refuge in the forest " March 24th, 1790, then the Whit Monday, was delivered with the PACAUDIERE a bloody battle, followed by devastation and plundering abominables".

The stop of the Royal Council of February 16th, 1788 had granted to the Ironmaster Nicolas Rambourg, " to make roll its factories of Tronçais" , pieces of the White Moors and Montaloyer, located on the territory of the commune. It will be the time of the " Adjusters of meules" (coalmen)… and also that of the crews of asses transporting the iron ore of Berry. One can also see there the origin of the many attachments of asses or mules, present in small the " locatures" until in the years 1930… and their tradition maintained by the Museum and the Festival of the Ass whose fame largely exceeds the regional framework.

A wire-drawing mill, additional of the Forging mills of Tronçais, was built about 1820 with the site of the old mill indicated " Mill of Laleu" on the Chart of Cassini. One knows it in the commune under name " Wire-nail works of Laloeuf" ; it produced wire of iron and wire nails with a raw material coming from the factory of Morat… in the years 1910, the schoolboys of Braize still found points hidden in the ground in the neighborhoods of the old wire-nail works.

" The first House of School was built in Braize in 1869, as attests it the inaugural plate, restored on the initiative of the Mayor, M.Guy Lalevée, with the re-entry 2006. It included/understood only the current central building and the classroom occupied some rez it of roadway; above the main door, the inscription " was engraved; REQUEST AND TRAVAILLE" , in large capital letters.

Rock of the Step of the Mule : This rock is associated with a legend of pact with the devil. The origin of the name is probably very different, the Step indicating the passage of the brook coming from the church to feed the close ponds and actuating the mills, often indicated by the " term; meule". Thus the Step of the Mule could be the passage to driving ford with the mill (the wire-nail works of Laloeuf was built on the site of an old mill). Moreover, it would certainly have been used as a basis for a cross of crossroads, which would explain the cavity dug in its center.

the Church Saint Antoine de Braize , built at the 12th century, presents the architectural style of constructions templières, a very military sobriety. It was restored very accurately recently… The porch of entry will be noticed and carries walled (external left of the bedside) undoubtedly borrowed by the monks; a tough local belief wants to make of it the entry of an old underground which gave access the buildings of Commanderie. The principal ceremony that one celebrated there was the Mass of Saint Antoine, during whom the statue of the guard of the Commune had left in procession by the small way who went along the Cure, to return by the old cemetery.
