Braine-the-Castle

Braine-The-Castle (in Dutch Kasteelbrakel , in Walloon Brinne-Tchestea ) is a common French-speaking of Belgium located in Walloon region in the Province of the Walloon Brabant.

At January 1st, 2002, Braine-The-Castle had a total population of 9  155 (4  455 men and 4  700 women).

Its total surface area is of 2269,80 ha, which gives a Population density of 400,83 inhabitants per km ². Altitude: 50 to 151 meters.

The village owes its name with the feudal castle (), now destroyed, which was built on two lumps of earth. The current castle, being next to the church, was built more tardily (13th).

Braine-The-castle is a medieval village where several witnesses of the village life of the Middle Ages remain: the Pilori (1521), the banal mill (with p. D. 12th S.), the house of the Baillif (Ca 1535).

The commune is crossed by a river: the Hain.

The village close to Wauthier-Braine is administratively attached to Braine-The-Castle since the 1/1/1977.
