Braine-l\' Alleud
Braine-l' Alleud (in Dutch Eigenbrakel , in Walloon Brinne-l'-Alou ) is a common French-speaking of Belgium located in Walloon region in the Province of the Walloon Brabant.
It counts close to: 37000 inhabitants (called Brainois (be)), on a surface of: 5199.4788 ha. The most populated commune province, it is with a score of kilometers of Brussels. It gathers three old communes: Braine-l' Alleud, Ophain-Wood-Lord-Isaac and Inhabitant of Lille-Witterzée.
Braine-l' Alleud draws its name from the Braine , old name of the Hain, river which crosses its territory and Alleud term which, with the Middle Ages, indicated a frank ground.
On the historical level, Braine-l' Alleud also abounds in memories of the Bataille of Waterloo. Part of the engagements proceeded there. The current Saint-Etienne church located at the center of the commune was then transformed into hospital of countryside. Famous Butte of the Lion is also on the territory of Braine-l' Alleud.
Locality whose territory was inhabited at the time prehistoric, Braine-l' Alleud appears in the documents written as of the 12th century. In 1131, the parish is mentioned there in the transfer with the abbey of Gembloux, of a good named " Dudinsart" , by Godefroid Ier, duke of the Brabant, and Godefroid, his/her son. As for the rural frankness, village or communauté9 freed, i.e. equipped with a particular urban habit and a local échevinage, it existed in 1218, most probably. During time, its Dutch Eigenbrakel name, appears under various C-Ws communication. It originates in, on the one hand, the term Braine, old name of the river Hain, on the other hand, that of the freehold, indicating a frank ground, have regard to the freehold which at this place the duke of the Brabant had, as Henri Ier in an act of June 1197 specifies it. This last was undoubtedly coupled with the first to distinguish this locality from the three others of the same name which border it. The frankness, whose creation can, undoubtedly, to be integrated in the general movement which saw in XIIe and 13th centuries to multiply on the territory brabançon urban foundations whose initiative, in the majority of the cases, returned to the dukes and in particular to Henri Ier, formed part in 1440 of the stronghold that the lord of the place held of the duke of the Brabant. This one enjoyed since 1489 justice to all the degrees on the territory the frankness like besides on that from foraineté. The administration of the frankness was with the hands of a particular échevinage which ressortissait with chief of direction to the aldermen of Brussels; it followed an urban habit, contrary to the aldermen of foraineté who them applied the rural right of Uccle, just as the close seigniories which concerned the duke of the Brabant; in the zones of spring hennuyer, the habit of Mons was in force. The seal of the aldermen of the frankness carried in 1358, one ecu burelé with three stitching lions, armorial bearings of Nicolas de Barbençon, lord of the place at the 13th century. The possession of these weapons was recognized with the commune of Braine-l' Alleud by royal decree of May 25th, 1838; their current use was authorized by the royal decree of September 5th, 1978. They are thus described: " of gold with fourteen burèles of azure and three gold lions stitching on the tout". On the feudal level, the territory is presented in the form of an extremely parcelled out ground. The principal seigniory, that of Braine-l' Alleud, stronghold of the duke of the Brabant, saw following one another its control unit, a series of lords belonging to various families. Let us quote in particular some names: lords of the manor of Brussels, Brabançon, Fagnolles, Enghien, Grez, Witthem, Montbroeck, Berghes, Heerenberg, Hohenzollern, Cusance, Lorraine, Vaudemont, Rohan, Soubise, Marsan.
