The kind Brahea belongs to the family of the Arécacées (palm trees). It was thus named to remember it the Astronome Danish Tycho Brahe, was been born in 1546 and was died in 1601.
Syn. Erythea, Glaucotheca
Classification
It divides its subgroup with 11 other kinds: Acoelorraphe , Washingtonia , Pritchardia , Serenoa , Livistona , Colpothrinax , Copernicia , Pholidocarpus , Johannesteijsmannia , Licuala , Pritchardiopsis
Distribution
The kind includes/understands Espèce S located with the Mexico, a species (Brahea edulis) endemic in the island of Guadalupe close to Baja California, and two other species (Brahea dulcis and Brahea nitida) which push until the Honduras, with the Guatemala, with Belize, the Nicaragua and El El Salvador.
Brahea push naturally in the arid regions with semi-desert, in the sites rock and composed of a low vegetation. However, certain species (dulcis, pimo, nitida and moorei) can develop in partial shade.
The Brahea kind includes/understands species which resist quite cold, so that three of its species are cultivated rather usually in Europe and elsewhere: Brahea armata, Brahea brandegeei and Brahea edulis. Brahea armata is cultivated the most, one calls it in France, the blue palm tree of Mexico .
Description
-
Feather-grass: Except for the species Brahea decumbens, the feather-grass is robust and right. It can reach 15 meters in height at certain species.
- Crown: The crown is composed of Feuille S laid out in range, in way more or less tight.
- Sheet S: The sheets are webbed, coriaces, somewhat ribbed and orbicular.
- Inflorescence : Brahea carry bisexual flowers. They are palm trees hermaphrodites, only one subject is enough for the production to viable seeds. They give long inflorescences, with the yellow flowers, which emergent of the foliar armpits.
Culture and cold average resistance of some species
The Brahea kind is of a growth is rather slow. It includes/understands palm trees which are rather rustic, as the figures show it below.
-
Brahea armata (- 12°C)
- Brahea brandegeei (- 8°C)
- Brahea dulcis (- 8°C)
- Brahea edulis (- 10°C)
The figures are given as an indication. They give the cold resistance of the palm trees under good conditions: short cold and relatively dry air.
