Brčko

Brčko ( Cyrillic Брчкo in ) is a city of the North of the Bosnia-Herzégovine and chief town of the District of Brčko.

History and statute

At the end of the war of independence of Bosnia-Herzégovine in 1995, the territory of the municipality of Brčko was divided between the Serb République of Bosnia (48% of the surface) and the Fédération of Bosnia and Herzégovine (52% of the surface) according to the Accords of Dayton.

This situation was quickly a source of conflict between the two entities because the place is stratégique : it constitutes a terrestrial corridor (corridor of Posavina) which connects the West and the South-east of the Serb Republic of Bosnia and it separates the Federation of Bosnia and Herzégovine from Croatia only of five kilometers. Moreover, the city returned to the Serb Republic of Bosnia what dissatisfied the Federation of Bosnia and herzégovine which considering private of the first port of the country. blue helmets of the Forpronu were then maintained on the spot to guarantee peace between the various communities.

The territorial dispute not being able to be regulated, the Arbitration court on the disagreement relating to the border between the entities in the area of Brčko ( Arbitration Court for Argument over Inter-Entity Boundary in Brcko Area in English) decided reconstitution of the municipality of Brčko which was set up in district the March 5th 1999. This solution was disapproved by the Serb Republic of Bosnia because its territory was found crossed into two and she regarded the district of Brčko as a violation of the agreements of Dayton.

The district of Brčko has an administrative statute particulier : it is independent of the two entities of Bosnia-Herzégovine and is managed by the mayor of Brčko and the international supervisor elected by UNO, the American Susan R. Johnson posts of it since the January 16th 2004.

In order to respect a total impartiality between the three principal people of the district (the Serbes, Bosnian and Croatian ), the arbitration court decided that the official languages would be the Serbe, the Croatian and the Bosnien, that the alphabets Cyrillic and Latin would be in force, that the Drapeau and the armorial bearings of the district would be those of Bosnia-Herzégovine,…

Geography

Brčko is located at the edge of the Save which marks the northern border between Bosnia-Herzégovine and the Croatia. Having access to the the Danube via Save, Brčko is the main port of Bosnia-Herzégovine, although it has an access to the Adriatic Sea by the port of Neum. The city is also a great industrial center.

The city is located at the South of the Plaine of Pannonia made up of fertile plains favourable with agriculture.

Population

In 1991, the population of the municipality of Brčko was of 87  332 Bosnian inhabitants including 44% of , Croatian 25% of , Serb 21% of , and 10% declaring itself of another nationality (of which Yugoslav).

At the time of the period when the municipality was found divided into two, the Serb ones constituted 97,5% of the population of the town of Brčko and of which the three-quarter were refugees.

According to the former mayor Branko Damjanac, the current population of the district of Brčko is made up of 40% the Serb ones, 39% of Bosnians, and Croat 20%. These figures are only nonofficial estimates because there no was census with Brčko since 1991.

Brčko has a faculty of economy and an important festival of Théâtre proceeds there.

Sport

Brčko counts two principal clubs of Football  : the FK Jedinstvo , double winner of the cut of the Serb Republic of Bosnia and which evolves/moves in the first division of the Serb Republic of Bosnia (the second division of Bosnia-Herzégovine), and the FK Lokomotiva Brčko which evolves/moves in the second division of the Serb Republic of Bosnia (central group). Moreover, FK Jedinstvo plays in the first national male division of Hand-ball.

The club of Basketball of Brčko, the Košarka Klub Brčko Distrikt , evolves/moves in the first female national division and the second male national division in 2006.
