Brîul

Brîul is a type of traditional Danse Rumanian that one finds on the slopes north and south of the Carpates, in all the plain of the the Danube like in Moldavie. Brîul (or brîu), brâu according to the new orthography, means “belt”.

Description of the dance

Dance of man in the beginning, she became a mixed dance today. The catch of the hands to the belt of the neighbors was abandoned with the profit of the position of the hands directly posed on the shoulders. As in the majority of the Rumanian dances, the dancers use strigături to encourage or to announce a change of step.

Various styles

  • Brîul carpatique : the brîul of Carpates is danced in a vigorous way and alarm. It includes/understands many figures of virtuosity made up of complex steps: beaten, pursued, pointed, jumped, intersected with blow of spur. It is carried out on the spot, in alternation with walks braided quickly in space, generally carried out by command (strigături). It develops on 3 or 4 binary measures, simple and syncopated, the accent often related to the hitch.
  • Brîul d' Olténie : the brîul of Olténie is exploited on a binary rate/rhythm and melodies as various as varied. The movements fast, are composed of small cross steps combined with steps beaten, carried out either on the spot or laterally or ahead and behind.
  • Brîul of Banat : the brîul of the Banat has a binary rate/rhythm but can be also asymmetrical (7/16). The movements are fast, the small steps are often crossed, combined with kneelings, small jumps, starts and fast rotations of the free leg in a direction or the other. It with the characteristic to dance itself with hitch.
