Brétigny-sur-Orge

Brétigny-sur-Orge is a common French, located in the department of the the Essonne and the area Île-de-France.

It belongs to the Communauté of agglomeration of the Barley Valley.
Its Habitants is officially called the Brétignolais .

The commune is served by the Gare of Brétigny, on the RER C.

Monuments

  • Saint-Pierre Church: mentioned as of 1030, increased in XIIe and XIIIe centuries, devastated by the War One hundred Year old, restored in XVe and XVIe centuries. It contained 250 burials. It is sold like national good with the Revolution and is classified Historic building in 1977.
  • the castle of the lords of Brétigny was built at the beginning of XVIIe. Left with the abandonment towards 1760, when its occupants deserted it to go to live with Maroilles cheese-in-Hurepoix, ila destroyed at the beginning of the XIXe century.

Important characters

  • 1872 : Paul-Gabriel Chevrier, farmer of Brétigny, discovers by chance, a process of drying of the bean flageolet which maintains its green color to him.
The culture of this leguminous plant will develop and Arpajon becomes the center about it; today, is held there still a fair with beans and the chevrier became a common noun.

  • Lucien Clause repurchases a seed trade in Paris in 1892. Anxious to develop its activities, it settles in Brétigny in 1899 near the station, node of communications important (the train arrives there since 1843). Technology

Brétigny-sur-Orge is known to be the cradle of the Aviation. On the commune the air base is 217 which shelters in particular:

  • the Institute of aerospace medicine of the department of health of the armies
  • the departmental site of Weather-France closed in 2006

In the past, the air base 217 also sheltered the Flight test center (CEV) which was one of most important in the world. Built in 1938, used by the Germans during the war, it was used by tests and developments sophisticated of material. This task is now carried out on the air base 125 of Istres.

The August 15th 1953, Jacqueline Auriol was the first woman to pass the wall of the sound with 1223 km/h on board a Mystère II. Today, there are no more planes with Brétigny; the track is unutilised because although long, it is located in very urbanized zone.

Technological academic institute

In Brétigny-Sur-Orge a IUT established in the Castle is the Fountain located in the district of the same name. One can follow there a Technological University degree in Management of the Administrations and Companies (continues, alternation, continuing education) or in Technical and civil Genius.

Possible confusion

  • During the War One hundred Year old, the May 8th 1360, French and English get along in Brétigny to make peace, but it is here about a hamlet of Eure-et-Loir belonging to the commune of Sours, close to Chartres.
