Bregnier-Cord, starting point of a novel of Stendhal

In 1826, Antoine Berthet, young seminarist ambitious is engaged by the count of Cordon to the castle of the Bar with Bregnier-Cord. He had been before tutor of the children of the mayor of Brangues, Mr Michoud of the Tower and had become the lover of the mother of his pupils. A few months after its arrival with Bregnier-Cord it is congédié.

Persuaded owe its disgrace with Mrs Michoud, it goes to Brangues where, in the church, during an office, it shoots at its former mistress. Its lawsuit proceeds in Grenoble in December 1827. He is condemned to died and carried out in February 1828. This business had made great noise at the time. It had been told that it had allured Miss Henriette de Cordon and that it was the reason of its reference per Mister de Cordon.

Stendhal was an assiduous reader of the Gazette of the Courts which had lengthily reported this business and one thinks that it took as a starting point Antoine Berthet, by the count de Cordon and his Henriette daughter to create the characters of Julien Sorel, of the marquis of the Mole and his daughter Mathilde, the heroes of his most famous novel, the Red and the Black.
