Saint-Christophe-with Arthabaska is a municipality of parish Quebec, located in the regional Municipalité of county of Arthabaska in the administrative area of the Center-of-Quebec.

Located with the foot of the the Appalachian Mountains, the plain was formed at the end of the glacial era by the withdrawal of the Mer of Champlain. The mount Saint-Michel (Arthabaska) is a 300 meters height and is made of crystalline and sedimentary rocks. The flora of the area is mixed and includes/understands Conifère S - mainly of the Sapin S -, and leafy trees: Birch X, Willow S, maple S and Poplar S. the Nicolet river and the Marcoux brook cross the municipality.

Several roads allowed the communications with the remainder of the territory: the Way Craig, (1800-1810), the Gosford way, (1820) and nowadays the road 116.

History

From 1839 to 1845 the mission of the Bulstrode Points, otherwise called the mission of Saint-Christophe, identifies the territory. The first colonist, François Commercial, arrives in 1833 and settles with the Bulstrode Points, i.e. near the current Beaudet tank in the town of Victoriaville (1994).

In 1835, Charles Beauchesne is established with 75 Arpent S more in the south, on the territory of what was going to become Arthabaska. In 1845, one proceeds to the proclamation of the municipality of Saint-Christophe which covers at this time the current territory of the municipalities of Victoriaville, Arthabaska, Holy-Victoire and Saint-Christophe. This municipality is created by ordinance and the officers are appointed by the governor what leaves few being able with the citizens.

The territory of St-Christophe is served by way of mission of 1838 to 1851, date of the nomination of the first priest in station. The registers of the parish open in the year 1853. Canonical erection: September 24th, 1851. Civil erection: April 20th, 1853… The municipality of the parish of Saint-Christophe d' Arthabaska was set up on November 24th, 1846 under the terms of the Act 8 Vict. chap. 40. (at the same time as Saint-Norbert d' Arthabaska). The municipality of the village of Arthabaskaville was set up under the terms of the Act 22 Vict. chap. 108 on August 16th, 1859. This village was built-under the name of town of Arthabaska on April 25th, 1903, under the terms of Act 3 ED. VII, chap. 70.

March 20th, 1853 took place civil erection following the adoption of a new municipal law at the Parliament of Quebec. In 1855, the Act of the municipalities and ways of the Low-Canada come to correct this situation, this Act transforms the parishes into municipality with an increased and decentralized capacity. The name of the first mayor is Adolphus Stein.

In 1858, from the municipality of Saint-Christophe part of the territory is detached which will take the name of municipality of the village of Arthabaskaville. The village is encircled completely by the parish. The latter continues to gather the remaining population to the Bulstrode Points. The territorial limits of Saint-Christophe were modified on several occasions. Saint-Christophe knew since his erection two dismemberments, the first, with the favor of the village of Arthabaskaville (1858), the second, with the favor of Victoriaville, in 1861 and one annexation, in 1888, of part of the territory of Arthabaska.

Charles Beauchesne, founder of St-Christophe d' Arthabaska

Born with Bécancour, on December 25th, 1792, of Charles Beauchesne and Agathe Deshaies, he marries Marguerite Vasseur of which he had 9 Elzéar children, Nérée, Cyrille, Urbain, Zoe, Rose of Lima, Scholastique, Joseph and Charles.

March 18th, 1835, ruined, it arrives of Gentilly to be established on the southern part of the Nicolet river to approximately 10 arpents of the church Saint-Christophe. He fixed his choice on this site during last explorations. Impressed by the size and the height of the trees, just as by the quality of the ground, he would have affirmed It is here that I will come to live and die .

Left with Olivier Morissette, a volunteer, a horse, a car, an axe, sixteen piastres silver and some pieces of furniture, it is quickly joined by a group of Gentilly and Grondines. Of this group Joseph Lavigne, Louis Lavigne and Louis Garneau are established leaving in Charles Beauchesne the first choice for its ground. This last chooses batches 5 and 6 of the 3rd rank of Arthabaska.

Once its built hut, it leaves to seek his wife and her 6 children. The family hardly survives thanks to the manufacture of saline and the maple sugar. Charles Beauchesne dies at 91 years the worthy age leaving a many descent and an area in full expansion

20th century

In 1993, the surface of the territory of the municipality of Saint-Christophe is of 74.87 km ², including 95%, that is to say 71.49 km ² in agricultural zone under the terms of the Loi on the protection of the agricultural territory .

Between 1950 and 1991, the number of farms fell from 125 to 46. Though in regression, the agricultural sector is always present on the territory. Between 1971 and 1986, the population increased with a growth rate of 137%. In 1991, we obtain a rate of 12.1%. The permanent population counted 2128 permanent residents and a hundred seasonal residents in 1993. In March 2002 the population was established with 2408 people.

A logotype is created in 1990 representative the special character of the municipality. In the foreground, we find the formed tree at the same time of a foliage and silhouette of a maple sheet which means on the one hand the importance of the acéricoles productions in the area of the Wood-Francs and on the other hand the importance of industries rising from the existence of wood. The sinuous blue lines point out the passage of the Rivière Nicolet like principal river and enviable natural elements. In the second plan, the grain silo evokes the presence of agricultural industry and, the area of Saint-Christophe is profiled in background by the layout of its territory. This one is coloured of yellow gold to point out the corn fields and the importance of agriculture in the area. A green band comes to underline the environmental aspect like priority concern on the level of the area and finally the name of St-Christophe is registered textually with the bottom of the symbol to indicate the place of action. The logotype with its elements symbolic systems thus becomes a vehicle of communication which incorporates the various elements which define the municipality.

A small school of row was renovated by the Québécois Association of the amateurs of antiquities and she is now recognized like cultural site. It is a place privileged by the tourists.

In spring 1990, a flood of the Nicolet river causes the installation of emergency measures within the municipality in order to come to assistance of the people touched by this flood. The worst could be avoided, Bertrand Roux loses all his animals, nevertheless no human victim. A few weeks later, the council of the time hastened to form a committee whose mandate was to work out a plan of the emergency measures in conformity with the Law on the protection of the people and the goods in the event of disaster.

Several residents were solicited to belong to the various committees inside the Plan of municipal civil security. The work of recruitment of voluntary and the development of the document spread out of 1990 to 1993. The deposit of the Plan was made in June 1993. Another tool whose council considered to be essential to be equipped considering that the municipality is not safe from a possible disaster on its territory.

Municipal organization

At the time of its proclamation, the municipality covers approximately 5 miles of face by 7 miles of depth. These territories will be amputees to become Arthabaska, Victoriaville, Holy-Victoire as well as part of the 6th rank of St-Norbert.

The territory of origin is bordered in south-west by the cantons of Warwick and Tingwick; in south-east by the line which divides 20th and 21e batch in each row of the canton of Chester, starting from the canton of Tingwick to going to the line which divides the 5th rank of the 6th rank of the canton of Chester; to the North-East left by the line division enters 5th and 6th rank of the canton of Chester and part by the line which divides the same rows in the canton of Arthabaska; in the North-West by the cantons of Stanfold and Bulstrode.

The first missionary of the Wood-Francs is the abbot Clovis Gagnon and the first meeting of the inhabitants to train a municipal council took place on April 4th, 1855. Ste. Victoire Stein, James Goodhue, Joseph Garneau, Alexis Lavigne and Pierre Bernier are then elected advisers and Mr. Aimé Désilets, lawyer, secretary-treasurer. The meetings of the council take place in the residence of Godfroy Gaudette. The first mayors, selected with the fate among the advisers, are Adolphus Stein, Nathaneel Brown and Louis Foisy.

Currently the municipality includes/understands the streets André, Beautiful-Site, of the Cedars, the Center, the Country cottages, Christine, of the Slope, Déry, of the Mutual aid, of Érablière, Gamache, Guillemette, Houle, of the Lake, Laroche, Laurier is and western, Leda, Lucille, Marcel, of the Titmouses, Messier, of the Mill, the Lily of the valley, Omer, of the Division, Pie X, Plage Beauchesne, Poirier, Pouliot, of the Four-stroke, Roberge, Valbert and Val of the Fir trees; Bertrand-Russet-red roads, of both, the sixth to the seventh rank, 116,161; the boulevards of the Southern Wood-Francs, Leon-Seam and Jutras is; avenues 1 to 4 and 10 to 12; the Chicago rows, five, six, seven, eight, new, small nine and eleven.
