Box-office means, in the broad sense, the turnover of artistic production. It is measured by the number of spectators, the number of past tickets or a money value based on one of both items preceding. It usually applies to a Film. The term “boxoffice” comes from the English word indicating the place where the tickets are sold.

Given that the use primarily retains the term to evoke the cinematographic frequentation, the article treats boxoffice of films.

Interest of the boxoffice

It is about a data initially intended for the professionals, in particular to allow the distribution of the receipts and to help with the programming. It became an argument of promotion with a communication centered on the records and the subjacent idea that work deserves to be consumed because it met its public.

But there is no correlation raised between the result to the boxoffice and the quality of a work. For as much, a success obtained over the grace duration a good word of mouth shows that it was well perceived by the public: it is the case of the films which multiply by more than 4 their score of the first week.

The financial activity of the industry of the Cinéma is strongly influenced by the boxoffice, because it enables him to anticipate a success with a probability stronger than the average. A success can start again a kind (Gladiator thus gave ahead the péplum become obsolete as Star wars popularized the Space operated with the cinema) or generate a frankness with préquelles séquels or .

It is important to notice that the American system of the boxoffice bases it on dollar earnings and thus supports the scores of recent films thanks to the effect of inflation, thus making it possible to communicate on regularly beaten records.

In all logic, the event created by the boxoffice with the advantage car-of discussing thanks to a virtuous circle and amplification the media.

Champions of the boxoffice cinema

The comparisons in time are difficult because the context is evolutionary. Thus, for example, even the analyzes which compare the world receipts by adjusting them of inflation can retranscribe only in an imperfect way the impact of films as well sociological as financial, because they neglect the repercussions of the merchandizing or the receipts of the other distribution supports, and they do not relativize the performances compared to the competition of the other leisures.

World

The world boxoffice is composed to approximately 40% by the receipts in the United States. Certain cinemas are powerful in terms of many productions at the year, like the Indian cinema which appears in this level in front of the American cinema, but they especially remain confined with their national territory and are exported badly. Only the anglophone films, and especially the American blockbusters, manage to obtain world careers and of scale. Thus the American films regularly obtain market shares higher than 50% in the Western countries except the USA.

The United States

In the United States, the success of a film is measured with the accumulated receipts. This way to follow boxoffice allows to measure success proportionally with its budget (still that should be removed the share distributer and the expenditure marketing), but results especially in to support the most recent films, taking into account inflation on the price of the tickets.

Created in 1905, the newspaper Variety diffuses each week the American boxoffice.

Since 1994, more than 270 films generated more than 100 million USD of receipts to the American boxoffice. 15 actors played in at least 8 of them.

France

In France, the follow-up is carried out on the basis of number of entries. Historically, the follow-up was based on the figures Paris-Periphery bus the system of exclusivenesses and of the exits shifted between Paris and the province thus allowed to have a faster vision of successes. With the manual system of the time, that also made it possible to have a more reliable follow-up and more rapid of the boxoffice of the moment. From now on, the technique authorizes a follow-up of the France figures without difficulty.

Nevertheless, the comparisons on the entries are not always easy because it is difficult to compare a result obtained in the Fifties whereas the annual frequentation exceeded 450 million spectators without true competition of television with the scores obtained with beginning of the year 90, whereas the frequentation represented a few 120 million spectators. In the same way, the competition of the numeric recreations and the hacking is to be taken into account to analyze the frequentation of the last years. Lastly, the phenomenon of the recoveries which made it possible to prolong a success on several generations almost disappeared.

For a long time, only the data after 1956 were available, with a good reliability as from 1963. Cinéchiffres , which provides daily information on the French boxoffice, was born only in 1970. However, of the recent work, completed starting from the files of CNC, allowed to supplement the boxoffice until 1946.

Popular actors

If the success of a film is inevitably relative and depends on its production costs, communication or distribution, one can on the other hand consider that a film having exceeded the million entry characterizes a certain popularity of film.

Since 1994, more than 500 films exceeded the million entry in room in France. The actors most often concerned can consequently be regarded as popular.

Since 1994,16 actors played in at least 10 films among those which attracted more than one million spectators.

2 major reports:

  1. 10 of these actors is French and 6 are American. Let us note that Jean Reno and Gerard Depardieu played in several foreign productions.
  2. No actress is present in this classification. Nevertheless, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Julia Roberts, Catherine Frot and Cameron Diaz played in 9 films having exceeded the million entry.
