Bowsprit (marine)

The Mast of Bowsprit , in the past called dolon , is a mast known as major (key of mast) of a ship. It is with the prow of the ship and is tilted forwards. It is above the stem.
It belongs to the Espar S, but it is interesting to note that it is not counted in the number of masts concerning the denomination of a Navire (Three-masted ship - Four-master).
Intended to advance the center of aerofoil, it supports the Amure flying S of the jibs, clinfocs and jibs. Often reinforced partly lower by one or of under-bores (S), resistant to the efforts of the stays of the foremast. It made it possible to compensate for a weakness in the length of the old sailing ships and could even carry, with 18th and 18th centuries a mâtereau and a partly low square sail called to livarde.
It was prolonged by a jib boom, even sometimes prolonged to him by a stick of covering joint jib. The bowsprit had the same diameter as the mainmast, but the third its length.
