Bovine Breeding in Austria
The Austria is a bovine cattle-rearing area. Its traditional system and its current races bring it closer to the bovine breeding in Germany of the south and the bovine breeding in Switzerland. But it should not be forgotten that current Austria represents only one small portion of the old Empire of Austria-Hungary. Its history thus recovers that of the breeding in Croatia, in Hungary, Tchéquie, Slovakia or Slovenia.
Origins
- Branch Black and white red of the mountains: probably oldest, derived from the domestication of Boss brachyceros and later crossings. The great race of this branch is the Pinzgauer, alternative local of the simmental. The Tux-zillertal is a downward cow of combat of the Swiss hérens .
Les invasions was accompanied by the cattle of each people. He provided milk, meat and traction with their stockbreeders. - brown Branch: Arrived with the Huns, as in Swiss and Bavaria, it gave the Tiroler grauvieh and the Braunvieh.
- Branch Gray of the steppes: Arrived with the Magyar , it gave the gray Boeuf of Hungary.
- fair Branch and red: This branch of Europe of south-west could be arrived at the 16th century of Spain. It is recognized that the horse Pure Spanish race contributed to create the Lipizzan equestrian school of Vienna. This assumption would explain the presence of fair cows with tendency bouchère in Austria in Germany of the south. (Fair of Carinthie or Kärntner blondvieh, Limpurg…)
- Scandinavian Branch : The Pinzgauer presents a distribution of the white on the belly, the tail and the dorsal line which connects it with the races influenced by the cattle Swedish introduces in Germany at the time of the Guerre Thirty Year old.
- Branch of the Races of the littoral of the North Sea: The holstein was introduced recently to bring a regular, homogeneous production and good market with the modern milk industry.
Current breeding

It is a traditional cattle-breeding area with mixed races, giving a calf of quality and milk of mountain pasture intended for cheese-making manufacture. This zone is populated black and white red or gray cows. Formerly, each valley had " sa" race. Today, they were standardized with the Braunvieh, Pinzgauer and simmental. There remain however some old races like the Tiroler grauvieh, the original braunvieh (Österreichisches braunvieh) or the tux-zillertal whose role is limited to the Combats of queens.
