Geography

History

July 27th 1214, the king of France Philippe Auguste gains the Bataille of Bouvines over a formed coalition of the Count de Flandre Ferrand of Portugal and of the Emperor Otton IV of Brunswick.

Involved forces:

  • a coalition assembled and paid by Jean without Ground (absent from the battle). Around 24.000 men, including 2.000 knights.

  • the French ost of Philippe Auguste, Robert de Dreux, Duke Eudes of Burgundy. Approximately of 20.000 men, including 1.500 knights.

The strategy of united was to encircle and to put out of clipper the French royal forces but the strategy carried out by Jean without Ground will fail, because espionage beats full sound. Prevented of a possible attack on two faces, one of the part of the French Army directed by the future king Louis VIII crushes the English troops with the Bataille of the Rock-with-Monks (on July 2nd 1214). Grace in particular to the heroic resistance of the fortress ordered by Guillaume of the Rocks. Jean Without Ground returns then in England and leaves a big number of machines of wars. He is extremely probable which the destiny of the battle of Bouvines was played here the Rock with the Monks. Jean without ground does not find himself any more but with only one part of his allies: that of Otton IV of Brunswick. The forces of the axis gather most of the forces based with Valencians, directed in particular by Otton IV of Brunswick. This last wants quickly to eliminate the king from France. The French forces find a brêche on the enemy left side and take with reverse the Flemish troops, the shock is violent and quickly gives the advantage to the French forces. Otton IV flees the battle which was lost.

This battle, gained by an army primarily made up militiamans of the French cities against an army the noble ones and feudal specialists in the War, was described amongst other things by Georges Duby like one of the events founders and constitutive of the French nation and the feeling of membership in France, at least for the inhabitants of the Paris basin. If one believes the sources of them, this victory was warmly celebrated by the people, joined together around the king, which contributed to its prestige. It is perhaps there the beginning of the popular myth of the good king, who crumbles only with the Révolution.
