Navy with veil

Sailing originating in the Indian Ocean. This term is generic, it indicates a whole variety of ships extremely different from/to each other. It was diffused by the Arab navigators in the Indian Ocean, built out of wood, gréé of one or more Mât S carrying each one a trapezoidal sail improperly called Lateen sail. It always is very much used nowadays, of Indonesia to Madagascar. The current size varies between 8 and 30 meters. Best built go very well to all the paces of close/good-full to the back wind with a predilection for the loose one or they are frightening. The boutres are divided into two categories:
  • those which have the square poop (or in table).

  • and those which have the pointed poop.

The first includes/understands:

  • the Baggala, which is the largest Arab ship

  • the Ganja (ship), from 70 to 200 barrels, which one finds between Arabia and India
  • the Sambuck of the Red Sea
  • and the Jehazi of Zanzibar and of the west coast of Madagascar.

In the second category, one finds:

  • the Bhum or bum or boom, which existed in the Persian Gulf before the arrival of the Portuguese (it measures from 60 to 200 barrels, has two masts and its very tilted stem is projected beyond the hull with a very marked slope)

  • the Zarug, especially employed on the coasts of Yemen and the Hedjaz. Its tonnage seldom exceeds the 100 barrels, and its speed makes of it the favorite of the Pirate S and Contrebandier S.

Merchant navy

The name of boutre or dhow is also given to small cargo liners of Arab construction traditional which are devoted to the coastal traffic at sea Rouge and in the Indian Ocean of Madagascar to the Bay of Bengal. They are ships from 300 to 500 tons of load, with very slim hull out of wooden. They are found there too sometimes implied in transport of drug and the acts of maritime piracy.
