Boutilimit

Boutilimit (in Arabic: بوتلميت) is a town of Mauritania located at 164 km in the south-east of the capital Nouakchott.

History

Founded at the 19th century century by a mystic scholar, it was an important center of teaching and formation. The Désertification compromised its economic development partly, but Boutilimit remains the most important religious training center of Mauritania.

Geography

The city is located at an average altitude of 50 m, with 17°32' NR, 17°43' O.

Its Climat is arid with hyper-arid, monomodal with coastal alternative.

Demography

At the time of the censuses of 1977, 1988 and 2000, the number of inhabitants was respectively of 7.263,14 545 and 22.257.

In 2005, the population was estimated at 27.170 inhabitants.

Culture and tourism

Its Koranic school is famous thanks to its library, made up at the origin by Sheik Sidiya (1774-1868), the second collection of manuscripts of the country after that of Chinguetti. One would have found a complete manuscript recently there unqiue in the world, a treaty of grammar of Averroès.

Boutilimit is also known for its artisanal productions, in particular the carpets in hair of camel or goat, the silver jewels and the trunks in ebony.
