This area with the shape of an irregular triangle limited, in north, by the Seine since Tweed until the Quillebeuf-on-Seine; in the west, by Risle since Pont-Audemer until Brionne; finally in the south and the east, by a broken line energy of Brionne to Tweed, resembling the Country of Caux: the meadows occupy the bottom of the valleys, while the cultures extend on the plates. The grounds of Roumois are argilo-limestones or argilo-silicieuses, of good quality and fertile, but it enherbe easily.
The country is very scrap-metal; many small woods exist around the farms. All the southern part, towards Bourgtheroulde, recalls the plate of the Neubourg; the part close to Pont-Audemer approaches like aspect the Lieuvin.
History
Le Bourgtheroulde-Infreville Blazon: “of azure to the money rafter accompanied by 3 heads of gold leopard laid out 2-1”. They are the weapons of the “ LeRoux ”, family of noblesse de robe which was illustrated at the Parliament of Normandy and in the marine of Louis XIII and Louis XIV. It is into 1499 that this family acquired the stronghold of Bourgtheroulde.
Avant this date, Bourgtheroulde goes up, most probably, in certain Théroulde, or Turquetil or Turold (according to the Latin language, Norman or saxonne) which were tutor of William the Conqueror. To reward it for his good and faithful services, the duke Robert of Normandy says the Devil or the Splendid one, gave him a stronghold on which Théroulde threw, about 1025, bases of a castle and borough which carries its nom.
En 1035, the duke Robert leaves in Holy Land pilgrimage, leaving Guillaume, still very young, with the guard of Théroulde, of the chancellor Osbern and Gilbert de Brionne. Théroulde was assassinated in 1040 by Guillaume de Montgommery. His/her daughter, Lesceline, had married Robert, count of Have. Their descent, entered in rebellion against William the Conqueror, saw private its goods which were allotted to the lords of Harcourt. By successive alliances of the girls, the stronghold spent 1100 to 1499 to the Tool bags, Rieux then Rohan Guéménée which yielded it, then, in Guillaume Leroux.
Ce last, originating in the country of Caux according to the ones, of the surroundings of Louviers according to the others, belonged to the noblesse de robe. He was president with mortar of the Parliament of Normandy. Very rich, the Leroux family built, in Rouen, the Hôtel of Bourgtheroulde, place of the Virgin, then place of the Market to Calves, (Guillaume and Claude Ier at the beginning of XVIe century), acquired the castle of Boissey-le-Châtel (about 1499) and replaced it by the current castle (Robert Ier and Robert II Leroux fine of XVIe, beginning of XVIIe). It had important fields, in particular with Saint-Aubin-D' Escroville, Acquigny and in the country of Caux. It was illustrated especially in the magistrature, where it carried out the essence of its alliances.
Claude, died in 1537, was to advise at the Court of Auditors, his/her brother, Robert, to advise with the Parlement of Normandy. Nicolas, their nephew, was to advise with the Parlement of Brittany and govern mortar of the Parliament of Normandy. Within the church, one can quote Guillaume died in 1532, abbot of Aumale, Nicolas, his brother, canon senior of the cathedral, Jean their nephew, prior of the Mount to the Patients and Abbaye of Auffay.
Mais it is in the army and more especially in the navy, than one finds those of the Leroux family which left the most trace in the history. The first, Louis (1600-1672) lord of Infreville and Saint-Aubin-D' Escroville, was intendant of the ports under Louis XIII and Louis XIV with row of admiral. The second, Louis (1642-1712) his son, after a brilliant career of combatant, was named chief of squadron by Louis XIV. He died in Infreville and is buried, with his father and other family members in the heart of the church of this commune. One can quote the two brothers of this last: David (death in 1713) which was general police chief of the marine with Toulon and Robert, lord of Rouville, which was killed with the seat of Candie.
Sous these various lords, the borough was to know various fortunes. Its situation at one day of walk of Rouen and right with orée of the dangerous forest of Londe, made of it a place of active markets (with corn exchange, market with the meats, market with fish), a center of important trade and a stage privileged for the travellers and… the soldiers. Those, at that time, were placed at the inhabitant and, generally, principe.
were not embarrassed
At the time of the Wars of religion, the borough and the castle of Bourgtheroulde was several times abused by Protestant bands. The castle did not have, moreover, to never be raised and in fact ruins were allocated, with the grounds, with Mr. Louis Varillon and Mr. Simon Rabasse in fructidor An III.
Le XIXe century was marked, primarily, by the installation of the place of the town hall, the construction of the elementary school, inaugurated in 1858, the construction of the town hall, decided in the 1858 and inaugurated on May 13rd, 1866.
En 1871, January 3rd and 4th, of the very hard combat opposed the mobiles of the Landes and the Ardèche to the Prussian troops. Many deaths were to regret. Prussians and French are buried in the communal cemetery, beside the family vault Gasse which had offered the ground of this cemetery in 1869.
Pour the little story, let us quote that a capital execution took place on the public place on February 4th, 1827. The sieurs Heutaux and Daguet were guillotines to have assassinated a clerk of notary named Voisin.
Going up in the past, two facts are to be announced, which interest all the area of Roumois.
- Initially, wars of religion: the inhabitants of Roumois were for the partisans majority of the Reform, from where the quarrels sharp which ensanglantèrent the plate. One finds even several cemeteries huguenots, for example with Éturqueraye and Routot; strong castles were set fire to, during the fights: that of Bourgtheroulde we have says, that of Bosguérard, that of Marcouville, that of Hautonne, that of Honguemare…
- In addition, there was the colonization of the French West Indies: the roumois make parties, among the Norman ones, of those which, many, left towards the isles (Martinique and Guadeloupe) in XVIIe and XVIIIe centuries; some settled over there (Békés); others returned later to the country… keeping in them the nostalgia of the tropical charms. Much embarked, under the same conditions, towards the other islands of the Meeting and of Saint-Domingue.
La common was consisted fusion into 1965 of Boscherville and Bourgtheroulde, to which, in 1973, Infreville.
