Bourgas (in Bulgarian, Бургас) is a town of 209.479 inhabitants (March 1st, 2001, source: nsi.bg), located in the Oblast of Bourgas, on a peninsula at the edge of the Black Sea. History

Bourgas would have been rested by the Greek colonists of Apollonia (current the Sozopol) under the name of Pyrgos (Πύργος in Greek). During the Roman period, it took the name of Deultum , and there was a military colony for veterans (under Vespasien - 1st century). At the 17th century, Bourgas bore the name of Ahelo-Bourgas and was a small village of fishermen. Activities of fishing and cereal culture. The Turkish fortress being in the surroundings, Pirgos, received its name of Bourgas. In 1878, year of emancipation of Bulgaria, the city counted only 3000 inhabitants (in majority Greek).
