Boudin (walk of the Legion)

Boudin is the official walk of the Foreign legion in France. He is given rhythm with 88 pas /minute, which characterizes the " not Légion" so slow which obliges this troop to close all the Défilé S with foot.

The origins of the word, like those of the famous refrain, are rather badly known. It would be about a practice of the French Armies of the XIXe century to roll the fabric of tent and to thus fix it the bag. It was called then " Boudin " .

It is little of time before the departure of the foreign regiment for the Mexico that Mr Wilhem, chief of music, composed this walk which became the walk of the Foreign legion.

The current words probably were adopted towards 1870: the King of the Belgians had required that its subjects do not fight in France and of many Alsaciens and Lorrains, coldly exiled Franco-German Guerre of 1870, engaged with the Legion…

Hold, here is roll, here is roll, here is of the roll
For the Alsatian ones, the Swiss ones and the Lorraine ones,
For the Belgians, has of it there more, For the Belgians, there has more,

We are bright sparks,
We are rogues
types not ordinary.

We are legionaries.

In Tonkin, the immortal Legion
With Tuyen-Quang illustrated our flag,
Héros of Camerone and model brothers
Dormez in peace in your tombs.

2nd ringing

Our old knew to die.
For the glory of the Legion.
We all will be able to perish well
According to the tradition.

During our remote campaigns,
Facing the fever and fire,
Let us forget with our sorrows,
the death which forgets us if little.
