Botanical garden of Berlin

The botanical garden of Berlin , which occupies a surface of more than 43 hectares and account more than 22.000 Espèce S of different Plante S, can be regarded as one of most important the botanical gardens of the world and certainly largest of Europe.

It was created between 1897 and 1910, under the direction of Adolf Engler, with the objective studied the plants of the German colonies. For this purpose the enormous greenhouses were built which until the end of the the Fifties annually required approximately 1500 tons of coal for their heating. The garden was built to cure the lack of place of the old site, close to the agricultural garden Kleistpark builds in 1679.

The garden has the largest greenhouse of the world, the Große Tropenhaus , 25 height m, 30 broad and 60 length. Inside, under a tropical temperature with a very high moisture, grow Bambou S giants. In the other greenhouses, rare specimens of Orchidée S are, of Plantes carnivores, Cactus and Nénufar S of the species Victoria amazonica .

The plants are laid out in greenhouses of a total surface of 6000 m ² and in plat bands broken down by geographical areas covering 13 ha. The garden also includes/understands a systematic Arboretum (14 ha) and surfaces.

The botanical garden belongs to the free Université of Berlin. Beside the garden, is the botanical Museum which includes/understands a collection of prepared plants, important the Herbarium Berolinense and a specialized library.

The enormous greenhouse needed a repairing, because of the put vtrages and of its rusted structure. In December 2005, the senate of the city, according to information of the press, allocated a sum of 16 million euro for the repair of the structures.
