The Botanical garden of Angers offers a wooded and flowered space of 4 hectares in full downtown area. In any season, be like winter, the Botanical garden attracts the walkers, in love ones, the families and the tourists, for its trees, its plants, its brooks and its small bridges of wood, its plays for children and its animals (rabbits, goats and goats).

General presentation

Located formerly beyond the ramparts, on the Saint-Samson suburb, the Botanical garden of Angers is the first botanical garden of the City, XVIIIesiècle beginning. The botanical garden makes it possible to appreciate the landscape environment created by Edouard André at the beginning of XXesiècle.

Paths, cascades and statues confer, with the botanical garden of Angers, a romantic and serene atmosphere. It presents in comparison with the walkers very beautiful and old collection of remarkable trees: Paulownia, Oak of Afars, Elm of Siberia and Ginkgo S and Ginkgo biloba or Tree with the 40 ecus.

Historical presentation

With the development of botany in XVIIIesiècle, a first botanical garden is created in Angers in 1740.

He moves in the second part of XVIIIesiècle towards the enclosure of the Basins, bought with the Benedictines, to profit from a vaster space and a small brook which crosses it and to thus ensure his irrigation.

As of 1791, the botanical garden becomes a place of study, courses of botany, free and public, are given in the open air. The botanical garden becomes the botanical school of Angers. This botanical school has a scientific vocation and product of the officinal and medicinal plants. The school of botany provides medicinal plants to the patients on medical regulation.

In XIXesiècle, the botanical garden is increased and becomes a place of walk. The school of botany is transferred towards the medical school. The church Saint-Samson, dating from XIIesiècle, located in the middle of the garden, will be used as orangery in XIXesiècle. The botanical garden is decorated of a birdcage and a menagerie.

At the beginning of XXesiècle, the botanical garden was entirely refitted in 1901-1905 by the landscape designer Edouard André.

At the end of XXesiècle, is set up, beside the gate of the main entrance of the botanical garden, the Center of the congresses of Angers.
