Botanical company of America

The botanical Société of America (or Botanical Society off America ) is a Learned society the United States of America intended to promote the scientific study of the vegetable .

It was created in 1906 of the fusion of the botanical Club of the American Association for the Advancement off Science (founded in 1893), of the Society for Plant Morphology and Physiology (founded in 1896) and of the American Mycological Society (founded in 1903).

The initial members are scientists of the United States and Canada. Today, they belong to more than eighty different nations.

The first president of the Company is George Francis Atkinson (1854-1918) (until 1907), the vice-president is Nathaniel Lord Britton (1859-1934) (until 1907), the treasurer is Charles Arthur Hollick (1857-1933) (until 1916) and the secretary Duncan Starr Johnson (1867-1937) (until 1909).

In February 1914, the Botanical garden of Brooklyn makes appear off the first number of the American Journal Botany , official journal of the Company. It is directed by Frederick Charles Newcombe (1858-1927) and is replaced in 1917 by Charles Elmer Allen (1872-1954). Eighteen publication directors followed one another until today, the latest to date being Karl Joseph Niklas (1948-).

In 1955, the Company starts to make appear Plant Science Bulletin , re-examined initially directed by Harry Fuller (until in 1958).
