Botanical Company of France

botanical Société of France ( SBF ) is a Learned society founded the May 24th 1854. At its inaugural session it is fixed for goal to contribute to progress of Botany and sciences which are attached to it and to facilitate, by all the means of which it can lay out, the studies and work of its members (article 2 of the original statutes).

The foundation

This creation makes continuation of the meeting of fifteen botanists, qualified thereafter of founder member, who meet the March 12th 1854:

Three of these participants, L. Serious, A. Passy and W. of Schoenefeld, form a commission and establish statutes while taking as a starting point the geological Société of France to the creation of which Louis Grave had taken part. Besides the geological Company of France will accommodate the first meetings of the SBF. During the first official meeting, which proceeds with the agreement of the prefect of police on May 24th, 1854, an office is elected. It includes/understands A. Brongniart with the presidency, J. Decaisne, D. Delessert, H. Moquin-Tandon with the vice-presidency, W. of Schoenefeld and P. Duchartre at the station of secretary, T. Puel and E. Cosson with that of vice-secretary, Caillette of Hervilliers as treasurer and Profits as archivist.

In 1868, the SBF takes root in the new buildings of the central Société of horticulture of France before moving, in 1949, in the buildings of the Faculty of pharmacy of Paris. She is recognized like public utility by decree of the August 17th 1875. In the years 1920, different Herbier S preserved by the Company was placed in several institutions to ensure a conservation which the Company was not able to provide.

Publications

It publishes as of its origin the reports of its meetings as well ordinary as extraordinary as well as a review of bibliography. The extraordinary meetings are selected in various towns of France so that the members of province can also take part in the activities of the company. Excursions of botany, in France and abroad, since the origin are regularly organized. The SBF makes today appear two publications: Acta botanica (quarterly), a significant number of subscriptions is subscribed by institutions, and the Journal of Botany , whose subscription is related to the contribution and where is in particular published the botanical report of the excursions (last having taken place with Cyprus, in the Forez and with the Morocco).

The SBF gives moreover regularly various prices and rewards whose Price of Coincy adopted in 1904 and who rewards one seek in Taxinomie.

The Company counts 162 members as of the first year, since it oscillates between 500 and 800. Is the company opened to the women since the origin, his first wife member is Elisa de Vilmorin (X? 1868), widow of Pierre Louis François Levêque de Vilmorin (1816-1860).

Last actions

The SBF launched a project in 2001 on the development of a flora of France. A work of digitalization of the Bulletin was undertaken as well as Journal . In 2004, was held the conference of the sesquicentennial in which 105 people took part. In addition to a historical presentation of the Company, communications on botany in France today and its future as that of its teaching were then presented. The last general meeting of 2005 is the occasion to reaffirm the role of such an organization: It is important that, '', for the future, a more important role in defense and the promotion of botany in France, as regards scientific contribution and in terms of representation in the European and international authorities.
