History
The creation of the university is due to the aspirations of Benedict Joseph Fenwick, bishop Jesuit of Boston, to found an establishment of higher education in Boston.
In 1827, Fenwick opened a school close to its cathedral, but it had to move it out of the city because the relationships to the Protestant authorities of Boston were far from being good.
In 1857, John McElroy took again the project of a college Jésuite in Boston and opened an establishment in the south of the city on Harrison Street. He called it Boston College. But this school was transitory and closed its doors later two years, because the authorities of Massachusetts always refused to grant a charter until 1863; on this date, Johannes Bapst, first director of the institution, wanted to reopen the college on Harison Street. At the end of the 19th century, one counts 500 students, so that in 1927, the college ( Boston College High School ) separates from the university.
In 1907, the director Thomas I. Gasson, makes buy the Lawrence farm on Chestnut Hill, in order to transfer the institution in full expansion. He put at the contest the project of the new campus which was gained by Charles Donagh Maginnis. In 1926, Boston College confers its first diploma on a woman. The 20th century was marked by the demonstrations coeds against the Guerre of Vietnam.
In 1974, Boston acquired College the campus of Newton College off the Sacred Heart (: 162,000 m ²) to accommodate the student's population in full rise.
