Boson V of Provence

Boson V of Provence (born v. 844 - died the January 10th 887) was a large French feudal lord of the 9th century. He married in 876 Ermengarde, girl of the emperor Louis II the Young person.
His/her sister Richilde of the Ardennes was the concubine and the second wife (870) of the king of the Francs Charles II the Bald person, which granted to his new brother-in-law the Abbaye of Saint-Maurice d' Agaune, who had been held by his maternal uncle Hubert .
Biography
A close relation of Charles the Bald person
With the autumn 870, Boson is the executor of the duke Girart of Roussillon, in company of the marquis Bernard de Gothie and of the count Eudes of Orleans. Charles the Bald person entrusts the administration of the to him Comté of Troyes.In January 871, Charles the Bald person appoints it governor (duke) of the Lyonese and the Viennese (Burgundy Cisjurane), in succession of Girart of Roussillon.
In 872, Charles the Bald person appoints it adviser and chambrier of his son Louis the Stammerer (his nephew), king d' Aquitaine since 867. Boson receives also the county of the Berry. and functions of the count Gerard of Auvergne (wire of Gerard of Auvergne died in 841 at the time of the Battle of Fontenoy-in-Puisaye), deposited by the king.
In 875, with died by the emperor Louis II the Young person, Boson accompanies king Charles the Bald person who leaves in Italy to receive the title of emperor of the pope Jean VIII. The new emperor, Charles, name his brother-in-law, duke in Italy, and duke of Provence.
In February 876, with Pavia, Charles the Bald person before setting out again for the kingdom of France, names Boson viceroy of the Royaume of Italy. This same year he marries Ermengarde, the only daughter of the emperor deceased Louis II the Young person.
In 877, Boson, recalled by Charles the Bald person, turns over to France, but he entrusts the Royaume of Italy and the duchy of Provence to his brother Richard the Dispenser of justice and to Hugues, wire bastard of the emperor deceased Lothaire II. This same year, with died from his/her uncle, the count Ecchard , it receives the Comté of Mâcon and the Comté of Trawl-net. With its two new strongholds, Boson is from now on owner of the near total of the Vallée of the Rhone (Viennese and Lyonese), of the Vallée of the Saone (Mâconnais and Chalonnais) and of the Provence. Moreover, Charles the Bald person, before his death, signs the Capitulaire of Quierzy, which returns hériditaire the loads comtales, which is the true birth certificate of the Féodalité.
Died of the king Charles the Bald person, his son Louis II the Stammerer succeeds to him, with the kingdom of the Francs.
In May 878, the pope Jean VIII threatened by Buckwheats and of noble Italian, comes to take refuge with Arles near the duke Boson and of his wife Ermengarde . This one accompanies it with Troyes where large a council is organized to rule on the disorders in the empire and in particular the revolt of Bernard de Gothie and ambitions of the bastard Hugues to reconstitute the Lotharingie. The pope proposes in Louis the Stammerer to accompany it with Rome where it will be able to crown it emperor, but the very sick king already, and fearing to die on the way, sees himself obliged to refuse this honor.
Boson, always viceroy of Italy, makes a secret agreement with the pope, and accompanies back it with an aim of being made recognize King d' Italie, but the operation fails in front of the unwillingness of the bishops and the large Italian lords, and Boson returns furious from this failure.
The April 10th, 879, the king Louis II the Stammerer dies in Compiegne, his/her son Louis III succeeds to him on the kingdom of the Francs and the Neustrie, whereas his/her brother Carloman II recovers the Aquitaine and the Burgundy. This same year, Boson increases its possessions by adding to it the Comté of Autun.

Restoration of the kingdom of Burgondie
As of the death of Louis II the Stammerer, the death taxes of his sons Louis III and Carloman II are seriously disputed. The October 15th, 879, of the large monks and lords meet in council with the castle of Mantaille, (between Anneyron and Châteauneuf-with-Galaure in the Drome) with an aim of choosing the man ready to protect the Church and the country. They choose Boson as king and decide restoration of the kingdom of Burgondie made up of the vast Boson possessions, but also of the dioceses of the monks - six archbishops and seventeen bishops - present (Aix, Arles, Autun, Avignon, Beaune, Besancon, Chalon, Dijon, Geneva, Grenoble, Langres, Lausanne, Lyon, Macon, Marseilles, Tarentaise, Tonnerre, Troyes, Valence, Vienna).
The October 15th 879, Boson thus becomes king of the restored kingdom of Burgondie (including the Provence). It is crowned a few days later in Lyon, by Aurélien, the archbishop of this city. It installs its capital with Vienna, old Roman capital of Gaulle, and obtains a chancellery.
In a surprising way, his/her friend, the pope Jean VIII which proposes the crown of Italy to him, with the idea to make an emperor of it, and which does not understand that a lord of its value makes pass in the foreground his private interests, refuses this election and goes even until treating Boson, of tyrant and usurper. However as of 879, the new administration of the kingdom is set up as the many acts concerning the counties attest it. In July 880, Boson, names an abbot of confidence, Gilon de Tournus , like bishop of Langres.
However, the revealed ambition of Boson and its crowning, cause to create against him a new alliance of the Carolingian kings Louis III of France, Carloman II and their cousins Charles III the Large and Louis II Germanic the, which will meet in June 880 with Gondreville in Lorraine.
End 880, the troops of alliance took again Autun, Besancon, Chalon, Mâcon and Lyon and is in front of Vienna, Boson takes refuge with most of its troops in the mountains, leaving the defense of the city under the command of his wife. Whereas Charles III the Large left to collect the crown of Italy, Louis III and Carloman II give up the seat of the city and thus allow the Boson return in its capital.
Charles III the Large lately elected Emperor of Occident, the war begins again as of the month of August 881, and the troops Carloman II start again the seat of Vienna, but he teaches to death from his brother the king Louis III, occurred on August 5th, and raises at once the seat to go to collect the succession. However the troops of the emperor Charles III the Large arrive in their turn and succeed in taking the city which is plundered and set fire to. Richard the Dispenser of justice, Boson brother, takes under its protection his/her sister-in-law and his/her niece Engelberge and takes them along to Autun. Boson takes refuge in Provence.
In 884, with died of Carloman II, which does not have wire, the emperor Charles III the Large is elected king of the Francs. He proposes in Boson to recognize it like King de Provence under the simple condition of a homage to the Royaume of the Francs.
Boson, leaves honourably its fight against the Carolingians, and dies the January 10th 887. It estinhumé in the Saint-Maurice Cathedral of Vienna.
After her death, his second wife marries Ermengarde is named regent of the kingdom of Provence with the assistance of her brother-in-law Richard II of Burgundy known as Richard the Dispenser of justice - who inherits the “Boson honors”. In May 887, it leads her son, the future emperor Louis III the Blind man, near the emperor, so that he adopts it, which he does.
